Magic
Practical Magic: What are the essential aids of the successful wizard? Magic is a complicated business. A spell can be cast in many different ways but it will fail if the time-honoured rules are not obeyed. The greatest wizards may be born with special gifts but they can spend their lives studying the dark arts in order to discover more. Knowledge is power, as every true magician knows.
A magic spell can be whispered or chanted in order to work; it can be written down in familiar words or couched in a secret language; a spell can be worn or even eaten. Its power lies in the form of the words used — they could be from the wizard’s own language — and the way in which they are expressed. Some of the oldest spells are magical words or phrases, written on parchment and worn around the neck.
Wizard’s spells were used for good or for evil and their power was legion. Spells of transformation were believed to have been able to change lead into gold, or to turn a man into a beast. Spells of invocation could summon spirits out of thin air to do a wizard’s bidding. Spells of evocation could influence the heart’s desire or even stop time itself. Spells could be cast to manipulate the physical world, to move objects at will, or to make the self invisible. Spells were a way of seeing into the future and a means of solving the world’s greatest mysteries.
Looks Could Kill: The belief that an enemy could inflict disease or death merely by glancing at his or her victim dates back to some of the earliest civilizations and quick reactions are required if anyone is unfortunate enough to be struck down by the power of the evil eye. For the ancient Egyptians, the eye was all important. The symbol of an eye meant ‘to create’ in Egyptian and it signified wholeness.
